While attending Southern Utah University I completed 50
hours of service at the Union Rescue Mission located on Skid Row in downtown
Los Angeles. While there I worked in the kitchen at breakfast time as a meal
server, cleanup crew, meal prep cook, and I did inventory a few times. On any
given day there easily could have been 300-400 people wanting meals at
breakfast lunch and dinner. The
mission is a Christian based organization and myself, other volunteers, and
residence of the mission often talked about our faith.

Breakfast at the mission.
Los Angeles Ca
This is to discuss what happened
the months of June 2014 to August 2014. Over this time a student from Southern
Utah University went to the Union Rescue mission located on skid row in down
town Los Angeles. While at the mission this student served breakfast to the
homeless of Los Angeles at the same time she was receiving school credit.
People who enter the mission are
given food and sometimes even a bed to stay in. During the day there is a
recreational room for both men and women separately that they can charge their
phones in or sit and watch TV. The mission serves 4 different groups 3 times a
day. Volunteers work alongside residence of the mission. Very often the
volunteers and residences know each other very well and create an interesting
repour. Volunteers and residence get a chance to talk during a tiny break
between groups of people to serve when they can talk. Their conversations vary
day to day.
The student was from Southern Utah
University and was here to complete her EDGE project. This is something that
her university requires of all its students in order for them to graduate. The
EDGE program is designed to give students at SUU an advantage that other
students.

Project
Summary
My
project was to volunteer at the Union Rescue Mission, URM. The URM is located
in down town Los Angeles, it is a homeless shelter. The location of the URM is
generally called Skid Row, and it is also a tent city of sorts.
As a volunteer at the URM
there are different opportunities to choose from but I chase to work in the
kitchen. While there I served breakfast to the people who came into the
mission. There were four different groups, program men single women families
and gateway men, that got served three times a day 7 days a week and 365 days a
year.
Project
Highlights
My project helped me get
my faith back. Before I started this I had lost faith in other people, in God
and in myself. I started out as going to the mission because I thought it was
just going to be an easy 50 hours. At the end of my time there I realized that
what I thought bad happened to me and that I couldn’t believe in anything
anymore was nothing to what others had lived though, and they still had their
faith.
I also learned that when
you’re cutting onions that if you put some lemon juice on the cutting board as
you’re cutting them that your eyes won’t water! Honestly was the most amazing
thing ever.
From My
Journal
“They
gave me a nickname before I left. They are going to call me Sargent Chelsea
from now on.”
